Hello!

I am Joe. You might remember me from such websites as cotch dot net, twitter, and friendfeed, or else from Skeptics in the Pub or #ukscitweetup.

I am delighted to be joining the other nerds at Lay Science to blog about science policy, skepticism, the nature of science, and bad arguments.

I also blog hardcore cancer biology, science publishing, and fiction, but not on Lay Science: follow my vanity site for updates on those topics.

So I Broke My Hand...

Just a quick note to regular readers. Last night I managed to break my right hand quite badly (I was playing about shadow-boxing to perk myself up to write part two of the homeopathy post, and accidentally punched the wall :( ). I've got an appointment with a plastic surgeon on Monday to assess the damage and how to repair it, but blogging from me may be a little light for the next couple of weeks... I'll keep you posted!

How to Put the Moon on Your Blog

A number of people have asked me about the little moon widget you can see at the foot of this blog, which shows the phases of the moon in real-time. In fact, the image is generated by the U.S. Navy's Time Service Department.

These lunar phase images were created by R. Schmidt from ray-traced images of the Moon. A Clementine spacecraft mosaic of the lunar surface was mapped onto a sphere, and scenes were rendered as a virtual Sun "orbited" the Moon. The depiction of lunar surface features suffers geometric distortion but the terminator is correct with respect to the spherical Moon.

See Me Live at Westminster SITP Tonight

What Next For Science Activism in the New Media?

We'll be talking at te Barley Mow pub in Westminster. Further details here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=203939300182. Be there, or be quadrilateral, dude. Oh, and buy me a pint if you see me, there's a good chap.

The rise of science blogging and the effective exploitation by activists, scientists, and science writers, of online communication has been a significant but fairly recent phenomenon.

This meeting, which is an unofficial sequel to the Science OnLine conference in London earlier this year, will focus on the strengths a...nd weaknesses of this phenomenon, both now and in the future.

New Design

So as you may have noticed, I've redesigned the site somewhat. There are some bits that work better than others, so I'll probably be tweaking it a bit this week, especially the side bars that I think look a bit harder to read now. But the overall layout is a little cleaner, with a menu bar above that you can use to access blogs by specific writers or on certain topics.

Please direct the inevitable deluge of complaints and criticisms into the comments below!

ETA: The design may switch back and forth as I work out the bugs, apologies in advance!

Guest Blogging at The Lay Scientist

I won't lie, things haven't been going as planned. I was hoping to just potter along in obscurity, ranting to noone in particular on my own little blog. But suddenly I'm being invited to party conferences, giving talks in London, writing for proper news papers and meeting literary agents. Big projects are on the horizon, including a book.

Meanwhile, The Lay Scientist has grown onto it's own server, which has just served it's one millionth article. A couple of thousand people are knocking on my door every day; they want more content, and I have less time. The solution is you. I'm opening the site up to guest bloggers, who can follow in the steps of DeeTee and others.

Inside the Skeptical Blogging Conspiracy: Ben Goldacre's Real History Revealed

In the aftermath of major blogging landmarks like the BCA Statement takedown and the Jeni Barnett affair, I've received numerous e-mails on the subject of how it is that we manage to coordinate so much action so quickly on these key issues. Many thoughtful alternative medicine practitioners and anti-vaccination activists have speculated that there might be more behind some of our blogs than meets the eye... drug company funding perhaps, or a network of sock puppets created by Ben Goldacre. Well today, for the first time ever, I'm going to blow the lid off the whole skeptical blogging scene, and expose the secret cabal that runs the "Bad Science Community."

"We don't regulate clinics or companies": The GCC Respond to my BCA Complaint

Yesterday I highlighted the fact that the BCA misrepresented the findings of a Cochrane Collaboration meta-study in their press release detailing the evidence for the efficacy of chiropractic in dealing with various childhood illnesses. I say evidence, but I actually mean 'evidence', in the same sense that Britain's Got Talent is a 'talent' show. Anyway, with this being quite a serious matter I thought I'd refer it to Britain's top chiropractic regulators, the GCC.

Site Redesign - Back Up

I'm overhauling the site theme now, with the aim of making things simpler, cleaner, easier to navigate, and more readable. This is the first theme I've created myself; It's a bit of a work in progress, and there are a bunch of things I'm not quite happy with yet, so please leave any comments and feedback you have here. Also, try out the new menu bar to find posts on particular topics, or by particular guest bloggers.

Argh! And we're down again, after the site borked itself. Damnit.

Virus Writers Should Hang

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. A vestige of a vile virus vanished, stands vivified. A re-visitation of a by-gone vexation, wreaking its violently vicious and voracious violation of Vista's registry. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous.

I've been up all night.

Virus writers should hang.
