Witch-Hunters and Flat-Earthers (Me @ Guardian)

On 29 July, Christian witch-hunters accused of torturing and killing local children attacked and beat campaigners for child protection at a public meeting in Calabar, Nigeria. The same week, hundreds of members of the Islamist group Boko Haram were killed in suicide attacks on police stations across the north of the country. It's easy to dismiss these distant events, but we hold some responsibility for them – and the consequences of this religious extremism spread far beyond West Africa.

Smearing British Muslims Through Opinion Polls

Last year I wrote about what I called the "disgusting misrepresentation of British Muslims," the publication of heavily biased opinion polls by apparently Islamophobic lobbying groups, that were quickly picked up and promoted by elements of the right-wing press. This week, I'm pleased to say that a group of British Born Muslims who saw that coverage and my article, got in touch to let me know that they've been going out and collecting evidence to help fight for the reputation of their community. Those who saw my first piece for Liberal Conspiracy know that I'm here to advocate science-based policy, so this week I want to explore the science of opinion polls, and look at how the evidence has been abused by a network of right-wing journalists and lobbying interests.

All Hail the Space Cows!!

[bpsdb] What do you get when a creationist doctor, with an interest in the comparative study of religions, attempts to merge evolution with Islam? You get extra-terrestrial cows, proof that Darwin was a Muslim, and one of the strangest books published.

The author is one Dr Imad Hassan, a Sudanese doctor who came to Britain in 1991, and maintains an interesting website for his book and associated ideas. Hassan certainly seems to be well-intentioned - he spoke up for British teacher who was imprisoned in Sudan over the notorious teddy bear incident for example - but his views are rather unconventional.

The Disgusting Misrepresentation of British Muslims

A headline in the Daily Mail the other day caught my eye: "One third of British Muslim students say it's acceptable to kill for Islam." The report breathlessly recounts the usual Islamophobic rhetoric, that Muslims think murder is great and want Sharia law across the world, attitudes I rarely see among my Muslim friends. The results were based on a YouGov poll that didn't appear in any of the other news sources I regularly scan, nor even on YouGov's website. Intrigued, I did a bit of digging, and what I found was quite disturbing.

My First Hate Mail :)

Well you know you've hit the big time in blogging when you start getting hate-mail! Apparently I've offended a Christian AOL user with my article about MuhammedTube! This is particularly ironic, since the study I blogged about yesterday notes among other things that AOL users are more susceptible to being fed nonsense. "DiamondGuzzler" has obviously been guzzling a healthy diet BS with his glittering appetizers. Here's his mini rant in full...

Holy War Batman!! Christians attack Muslims with "MuhammedTube" Video Site.

Nothing is more bizarre than Christian Fundamentalists attacking other Fundamentalists for being irrational. Now, inspired by the mountain of dross, boobs, and whiny teenagers on Youtube, they've decided to launch a new site dedicated to attacking Islam through the medium of shitty videos. Welcome to... MuhammedTube.

MuhammedTube is the bastard child of InvestigateIslam.com, which is probably the most hypocritical website on the net. The best way of describing it is probably like the crusades, but without the knights and swords, and with YouTube.
