Reporting on Ardi

Fifteen years ago in Ethiopia, back in 1994, a new species of extinct ape was discovered. Ardipithecus ramidus, or ‘Ardi’ for short has been the name given to a particular female specimen. You may have heard of this find recently, as the story has been doing the rounds with print press and online media. However, what you might not have heard, thankfully, is the slightly ridiculous coverage of Ardi from some outlets.

The Associated Press (AP) writers are well known for mistakes in public science reporting, and these mistakes are to be expected, even with a big find like Ardi. From Yahoo news though, you get this rather strange quote:

Cervarix: MMR the Sequel? (Update 3)

Statistically speaking, the story that broke last night was tediously inevitable. 1.4 million doses of the Cervarix vaccine have been administered to teenage girls since the program began, and eventually - whether by chance or adverse reaction - one person was bound to die. Yesterday, for whatever reason, that teenage girl was Natalie Morton, and my sympathies go out to her kith and kin. Her death, and the manner of its reporting, will affect public health in ways she'll never know.

Karri Stokely: The New Christine Maggiore of AIDS Denialism

This is a guest post by British doctor DeeTee. See more by DeeTee here.

The Myspace picture albums seem to capture a wonderful moment in time. The scene is idyllic. Sun-kissed palm trees are set against an azure Caribbean sky, and a happy couple delight in their holiday trip to the Florida Keys. Elsewhere, we can see photos of them with their children, a wholesome, all-American family enjoying everything life has to offer and dreaming of good times yet to come. But despite the glowing vitality that is projected in the photos, things are not what they seem. The woman you see is Karri Stokely, a 43 year old who was diagnosed with HIV infection when she was 29 years old. She is keen to share her story, and does so on several other websites and blogs. It should be a story of courage and hope, but I fear it will not turn out that way. For Karri has decided to completely ignore medical advice and forgo her HIV medication.

OfQuack: Insights from the Latest CNHC Board Meeting

The CNHC have released the minutes of their July board meeting, and the contents provide a fascinating insight into the actions of the alternative medicine regulation company dubbed 'OfQuack' by critics. In this post I'll trawl through a wealth of titbits concerning their response to criticism, openness, and the activities of Mandate, the PR company they're spending public money to hire.

OfCom Rule on Jeni Barnett's MMR Show

Back in January, London-based LBC Radio broadcast a show hosted by Jeni Barnett that has become infamous. In an hour long segment, all sorts of wild claims were made about MMR by the host, covering the full spectrum from the vaguely reasonable to the nonsensical. Health professionals who phoned-in to the show were shouted down, while a homeopath caller was given free rein to make a range of wild accusations. In short, it was a travesty, so much so that a complaint was made to OfCom, who have today issued their ruling.

Chiropractors in Mass Website Withdrawal

Absolutely stunning news this morning via Le Canard Noir. Our campaign to hold chiropractics in the UK accountable to regulators for their false claims, has been more effective than anyone thought possible, and has resulted in the McTimoney Association deleting its website, and advising its members to do the same and remove their websites from the internet.

Homeopathy in Africa: The Crackpot Colonialist Invasion

[bpsdb] Guest post by British doctor DeeTee. See more by DeeTee here.

Recently, Voice of Young Science wrote an open letter to the WHO appealing for an end to the promotion and use of homeopathy for life threatening infections such as HIV, malaria and tuberculosis in developing countries. This is an appeal that is close to my heart. When I worked in Africa I saw how detrimental ineffective traditional and “alternative” forms of medicine could be, and how easily people could come to rely on totally inappropriate services for their health care. I remember one distressing case where a parent insisted on taking his small child out of the local hospital where I worked in order for the traditional healer to administer “muti” (a form of traditional medicine often made from herbs or occasionally human body parts). The child was suffering from meningitis, which was eminently treatable with antibiotics. He was brought back to us moribund the next day, when he died.

The Psychology of Drinking: When PR and Science Collide

[bpsdb] The following is the introduction to a recent BBC piece titled "'Glass hold' reveals personality." I've highlighted the crucial phrase:

The way you hold your glass can reveal much more than you might realise, a psychologist has warned. Dr Glenn Wilson, a consultant psychologist, observed the body language of 500 drinkers and divided them into eight personality types. These were the flirt, the gossip, fun lover, wallflower, the ice-queen, the playboy, Jack-the-lad and browbeater. Dr Wilson, who carried out the work for the Walkabout bar chain, said glass hold "reflected the person you are".

Yes, either Walkabout are now major supporters of science research, or once again we are seeing the effects of 'churnalism' - a press release from some unknown PR company abusing science for promotional ends, recited by media outlets as if it represents some sort of serious research.

'Ofquack' Hire PR Heavyweights

[bpsdb] Thanks to my sharp-eyed colleague at Thinking Is Dangerous, it's come to my attention that the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (aka "Ofquack") have finally posted some of the board minutes they promised to make available, from their May 2009 quarterly board meeting.

Ambulance-chasers and the Welsh measles epidemic

[bpsdb] Guest post by British doctor DeeTee. See more by DeeTee here.

If it isn’t enough that Wales is witnessing its biggest outbreak of measles for several decades (courtesy of rampant antivaccination propaganda that resulted in very low levels of MMR vaccine coverage), now we have to endure the spectre of an English company setting up shop in the epicentre of the epidemic in order to make money from worried parents by flogging them single measles jabs.
