Germany's Highest Court Rules On LHC: "Put Up, Or Shut Up!"

In February, Germany's Highest Court, the Bundesverfassungsgericht ruled on the motion of a German residing in the Swiss city of Zurich, to pressure the German government into trying to stop the operation of the Large Hadron Collider, the biggest machine ever built, and that also has an easy to misspell name.

Unlucky German MINTs

Whenever I hear a politician harp on about how much he favors education, I just roll my eyes, because every politician that's ever lived has harped on education, and very few have done anything to improve it.

Evidence-Based Assessment of Traffic Violations - Germany Is Starting Today

Germans are known for their high degree of organisation, their bureaucratic mentality, and, of course, their Autobahn (which, in fact, did not originate with Hitler). When these three things come together, what do you get? Flensburg, that's what.

Cast Lead

We Germans have lots of traditions pertaining to New Year's Eve (which over here is called Silvester) and the beginning of each new year. Just from the top of my head: Of course, there is food, in many families traditionally Fondue, there's the firecrackers, and there's drinking in moderation, of course! And then there's the weirder traditions, like watching the same, English-language (!) skit every year.

German Media's and German Public's ADHD: The "Swine Flu"

Remember my piece on the "Swine Flu" hysteria? I wrote it on November 12, that means week 46. The next day, the German Ministry of Health changed the notification rules for suspected and confirmed cases of "Swine Flu" infections

In German Politics, Ideology trumps Evidence

Investigation of the mechanism of decay reactions with single bond breaking and calculation of their velocity constants on the basis of quantum chemical and statistical methods - that's quite a complex topic to write about, isn't it? Well, someone wanted to write her doctoral dissertation about it, in the field of chemical physics, in 1986. Who? A certain Angela Merkel, whom some of you might also know as the current Chancellor of Germany [1].

The Making of a “Great War”, Pt. I - Why Britain fought for France in 1914

And I can't help but wonder, no Willie McBride,
Do all those who lie here know why they died?
Did you really believe them when they told you "The Cause?"
Did you really believe that this war would end wars?

- Eric Bogle: The Green Fields of France (Dropkick Murphys Version)

Apart from “The Great War of 2077” that brought about the collapse of the (fictional) Fallout-universe, there is only one War that is called “Great”.

Remember, Remember, the 9th of November

Even though the German National Holiday (German: "Tag der deutschen Einheit", "Day of German Unity/Unification") that celebrates the Re-Unification of the Federal German Republic (West-Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (East-Germany) takes place on October the 3rd [1] (formerly June 17 [2]), there is another day in Germany that is laden with historic meaning.

Tomorrow, on November the 9th, Germany remembers some of the most important dates in its history. On four different occasions during the 20th Century, fundamental and inimitable events took place on this day, sometimes called a "Day of Fate" for the Germans: The end of the Monarchy in 1918, the failed Beer Hall Putsch of 1923, the Night of Broken Glass in 1938, and the fall of the Berlin Wall 1989.
