I'm not going to publish it here just yet, but if you're interested, please E-mail me.
Okay, since I got way too many e-mails, I'll post and be damned.
After a lot of hunting, I finally found this man, Dr. Steve Goddard, an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Nebraska. Now, not a lot to go on, but he seemed to be an interesting fit - he's an "I.T. Professional", and he's done a load of work on "drought risk information".
And so I e-mailed him, just a short a note to say "Hi, I enjoyed your articles in The Register," and so on. The next morning, I got a reply, from a different e-mail address (a Google Mail account).
"Thanks much for your feedback, and thanks to Dr. Steve Goddard at the University of Nebraska for passing your message on to me. I have no relationship to him or the University of Nebraska."
I didn't get any reply from the university e-mail account. So make of that what you will. You can reach one Steve Goddard from the other, but they're *ahem* absolutely definitely not the same person...
What I do have now is an e-mail for Steve. I have a policy of not publishing peoples' e-mail addresses here, but you can find it easily enough if you go to this page, and search for gmail (it's in the comments).
At this point, I'd love to speculate, but I won't. It's all a bit weird though.

Why not post some of his credentials at least?
My totally wild guesses on what's up with this "Steven Goddard" character...
I think the bigger question is, why's The Register giving him writing gigs?

"`Thanks much for your feedback, and thanks to Dr. Steve Goddard at the University of Nebraska for passing your message on to me. I have no relationship to him or the University of Nebraska.'"
Hmm... this leaves us no closer to figuring out who's behind the "Steven Goddard" essays. I think I'll stick to my "pseudonym" theory until something interesting happens... :)

Lol, I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not :P
Let's just say I'm really not convinced by the denial.

Well, to be serious, I still think "Steven Goddard" is a pseudonym. Although I may change my mind on that if I get to know what the GMail message looks like exactly...

That's pretty much the entire e-mail. He goes on to say that he's not sure what else he's going to do on the topic, and suggests he may move onto something a little different next. I find it very strange though that I send an e-mail to one Steve Goddard, and he immediately knows where to forward it on to, does so, and doesn't mention a whisper to me about it.

Well, El Reg has a "mail the author" feature... (I sort of found it by accident, by the way.)

Yes, but that has nothing to do with his GMail account, besides which are you seriously suggesting that this professor would google the other Steve Goddard, find his address, forward my e-mail to him, rather than just replying with "you've got the wrong guy"? It seems rather odd.
Also my understanding from reading around the comments is that the Reg address has been pretty much ignored.
The other point is that the e-mail gives another useful piece of information to search with. One of the things I learned from tracking Obi is that any little extra piece of the picture you can find can open up a whole new set of searches.

Oh OK... now I'm starting to be convinced... :)
(The commenting system here seems to be borked in some way... I had to submit this comment several times before it'd get through.)

It's not the commenting system. An article I wrote a while back on 9/11 has been mentioned on some famous website (I-am-bored.com I think), and I'm having bandwidth issues due to insane numbers of people trying to access the site :|

Here's yet another Steve Goddard, software engineer in the SF bay area.

Why don't you just ring the guy at Univ. of Nebraska and ask him directly to whom he forwarded your mail?
Hi.
I was doing a little digging on El Reg and its AGW denial campaign and found your site as a result.
It's curious - they never used to deny scientific reality - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/03/29/blair_climate_speech_nz/ , but now they've got the likes of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Orlowski churning out odious pieces of rhetoric, distortion and lies. And, of course, they disable comments for any climate attack piece.
I did read an exchange between Gavin Schmidt and this Goddard character in the comment thread at http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2008/06/north-pole-notes/ - Goddard doesn't do very well - to put it mildly.
I'm guessing ExxonMobil bought a controlling share. ;)
